Dirty Sanchez Band Member Warms Up to Release Solo CD

DJ Barbeau can’t say enough about MySpace. The turntable master, who joins Mario Diaz and drag sensation Jackie Beat in electro-rock outfit Dirty Sanchez, credits his Friday, April 6, solo gig at Club Lucky Pierre at The Stud to the online networking site.

“That’s where I first saw a flyer for Lucky Pierre,” admits DJ Barbeau, who has opened for such acts as ‘80s greats Duran Duran, the iconic Boy George and even electronica superstar Moby.

Lucky Pierre, the first-Friday-of-every-month club hosted by former Miss Trannyshack Coco Canal, brings Barbeau back to San Francisco. The DJ hints he might even provide a sneak peek at his soon-to-be-released debut solo CD NightFlight, an intoxicating blend of new disco, funk and electronica.

[Bay Times] As such a new hot-spot, what brings you to Lucky Pierre?

Usually I like places which have a seedy, almost dirty quality, and that came through from Lucky Pierre’s advertising.  Second, the music had to fit. DJ Donimo seems to have his finger on the pulse.  That is probably the most important, that and having a crowd, of course. Third, I’m always attracted to places that are Tranny and Drag Queen friendly. Those places generally always make for some messy times, tolerable of almost anything.

Does playing in San Francisco differ from around the country?

I’ve only played SF once. All I remember is people in SF like to party! Not like they don’t other places, but SF gets pretty crazy. Every city is different. Some cities are more open to different kinds of music. Others can’t quite move on. Sometimes you have to be crafty in how you deliver new types of music by almost disguising the tracks, surrounding them with familiar staples.

How does Dirty Sanchez impact your solo career?

Dirty Sanchez has been the catalyst for being able to travel as a solo DJ/producer. I’m very thankful. It feels really good that artists come to me for help writing and producing music because they’ve heard me with the band. Dirty Sanchez is a very special situation. There are three very special, talented people involved. I honestly don’t think we would be where we are now if all three of us were not involved.

Tell us about your first solo mix CD NightFlight.

The mix is broken up into four parts. I knew the opening track was Francisco’s “Big Love/Mega Love.” It feels like a beginning. Tiga’s “Good as Gold” has a great ending. Alexander Robotnick’s “Dark Side of the Spoon” is a track where things change in the mix as is VoomVoom’s “Sao Verought.” The middle of the mix gets more romantic with tracks like Morgan Geist “Most of All” and Sebastian Tellier’s “Broadway.” Overall, the mix has a very distinct quality. Lots of planning that went into it.

How does performing with Dirty Sanchez compare your DJ work?

They are quite different. With Dirty Sanchez, it’s very theatrical, very much a show. It’s live with drums and guitars and keyboards. Everything is very “large.” It’s also usually pretty stressful. More things can go wrong when more people are involved. We’re all divas in our own minds. Sometimes that gets in the way, and it’s not pretty.

Spinning on my own, I’m essentially providing a soundtrack for what a promoter has created and is trying to give his clientele. It’s generally much less stress but just as fun!
