Notorious Sainted Glamazon About Town

While A-Gays across the city gathered last Sunday for the annual Academy of Friends Oscars bash and charity fundraiser, I opted for a considerably more low-key alternative. It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, and the last thing I seriously wanted was to throw on my formal best and hobnob with the bourgeoisie. It’s never my preference, to be honest, but it’s especially low priority when the sun is shining and my instincts tell me there are men to be found.

For those that haven’t noticed the theme in recent columns, dating is becoming a significantly higher priority for me right now. While I’ve been more than satisfied with everything else I’ve accomplished in recent years – from amazing friendships to social accolades, fundraising goals to community activism – sometimes I strongly feel certain aspects of my life are sorely lacking. This couldn’t be more noticeable than in the long-time absence of any form of significant personal social life.

So my goal of late, starting several weeks ago when I quite unexpectedly found the courage to ask a handsome young man for his phone number (which led to a subsequent, extremely nice dinner date), has been to explore my opportunities and create for myself a bona fide social life. And I’ve been pursuing that end like a woman on a mission!

In actuality, more often than not, that means removing drag from the equation altogether. That’s perfectly fine with me, I must say. When I’m working too often – which happens more frequently than I’d like to admit – I not only have no time to date, it can feel like who I am outside the dress is somehow washed away with the make-up. This doesn’t mean I plan in any way, shape or form to disappear from the local scene or shirk my responsibilities. Several days a week – and at least once every weekend – I’m still out on the town.

This past Saturday, for example, I got my fill of drag at the Grand Ducal Council of San Francisco’s Alice in Wonderland-themed Down the Rabbit Hole Hearts Ball fundraiser at Café Flore. Ducal Princess Royale Miso Hornay gathered a fantastic line-up of performers including Miss GAPA BeyonSoy, Marijoy Tabatsoy, reigning Empress Renita Valdez and Grand Duchess XXXVI Landa Lakes to entertain the enthusiastic masses.

The bulk of the fundraising, though, came from raffle sales by the six King & Queen of Hearts contestants. Max Amillion, Nellie Bear and Char Dine rallied for Queen with Jonathan Lee Pandoy, Jimmy McConnell and Andy V. working to be King. By the time Andy and Char were crowned, a grand total of $1,775 had been raised for local charities.

However, after an evening as The White Queen – not the most flattering look I’ve ever gone for, I’ll admit — I was definitely ready for a relaxing, wig-free afternoon. So with the glorious blue skies overhead, I declared this past Sunday a  personal day. To that end, I decided to throw on my best boy drag and spend the day prowling the one place I knew there would be testosterone aplenty — the always amazing beer-bust at The Eagle.

Hosted by Sister Adora Penthouse-View, the afternoon was raising money for the San Francisco Fog rugby team, and simply crawling with some of the hottest man meat the city has to offer. Quite frankly, I’d forgotten how much fun is to be had at The Eagle. It’s been far too long since I’ve visited the legendary SOMA hotspot, which used to be a Sunday tradition for me in years gone by, but it all came back to me pretty quickly.

When I arrived at 3 p.m., the patio was sparsely populated, but within an hour, it was wall-to-wall men…and I couldn’t have been happier! Thankfully, there were also plenty of my favorites to schmooze and socialize with while browsing the smorgasbord of beef. President of the local Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Maudlin Masscara is always fun to hang with, as are my Ducal family:  Grand Duke XXXV Carlos Medal, reigning Grand Duke Patrick Noonan and Royal Daddy’s Boy 2009 Erick Lopez.

Of course, the person who got the majority of my attention was a Sexy Bear I couldn’t help notice staring at me for much of the afternoon. After strategically placing myself in his line of vision for literally hours on end, he finally motioned me over to chat. Within minutes we’d exchanged numbers, and my once anemic personal life received another boost.

To tell the truth, we’ve spent the last couple days playing that fun little getting-to-know you game, which can be so nerve-wracking at times and so rewarding at others. So now in addition to juggling drag, fundraising and deadlines, I’m back on the dating market full swing. In fact, that handsome devil is waiting on me right now, even as I’m writing this, to head to the Little Boots concert at The Fillmore.

As I’ve said, I’ve been on a quest to get a personal life, and it seems that – even in spite of myself, at time – I’ve now got one. Waiting. Literally. Mission accomplished.
